Nigeria’s sprint queen Tobi Amusan has opened up on the injury setback that prevented her from defending her women’s 100m hurdles title at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The world record holder settled for a bronze medal after clocking 12.60 seconds in Thursday night’s final. Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton claimed the gold medal with a time of 12.33 seconds, while Jamaica’s Megan Tapper finished second in 12.41 seconds.
Amusan entered the competition as the defending champion after winning the event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and the 2022 edition in Birmingham.
However, her hopes of completing a historic hat-trick took a hit after an injury scare during training camp affected her preparation for the championship.
Speaking after the race, the Nigerian athlete revealed that a heavy fall before the competition left her worried about her knee.
“I had a pretty bad fall at training camp, so I’ve been a bit concerned about my knee coming into this meet,” Amusan said.
Despite the setback, the 100m hurdles star expressed gratitude for making it to the podium and competing at the highest level.
“I’m just thankful I was able to hold it together and get on the podium once again,” she added.
Amusan’s bronze medal adds another achievement to her impressive career, even as the injury setback denied her the chance to extend her Commonwealth Games dominance.
The Nigerian athlete’s resilience has continued to earn praise as fans look ahead to her next challenge on the global stage.
