Burna Boy Chooses Nigerian Legend Over Messi, Ronaldo
Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy has sparked a fresh football debate after naming former Super Eagles captain Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha as the greatest footballer of all time.
While fans around the world have spent years arguing between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the GOAT debate, the Grammy-winning singer chose a different path.
During a recent interview with ESPN, Burna Boy placed Okocha among football’s greatest legends, mentioning him alongside Brazilian icon Pelé.
“I will say Jay Jay Okocha. It is between him and Pele. I am not doing that Ronaldo or Messi stuff,” Burna Boy said.
The singer’s choice has generated reactions from football fans, especially in Nigeria, where Okocha remains one of the country’s most celebrated sporting heroes.
Known for his incredible skills, creativity, and unforgettable dribbling ability, Okocha built a remarkable career across some of Europe’s biggest leagues.
The former Super Eagles star earned 73 international caps for Nigeria and scored 14 goals. He also played for top clubs including Paris Saint-Germain, Fenerbahçe S.K., and Bolton Wanderers F.C. before retiring in 2008.
His unique style, confidence, and ability to entertain supporters made him one of football’s most admired entertainers.
Burna Boy’s latest comments come after another major football-related achievement. The singer featured on the 2026 FIFA World Cup collaboration “Dai Dai” with Shakira, a song that reached No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the highest-charting World Cup song in the chart’s history.
The debate over football’s greatest player may continue, but Burna Boy’s bold choice has once again placed Okocha’s legendary career in the global spotlight.
