Argentina Threatens Deportation Over Anti-Argentine WC Speech
A new controversy has erupted in Argentina after President Javier Milei introduced tough immigration measures against foreigners accused of spreading hatred or promoting violence against Argentines.
Milei signed an emergency decree on Thursday that allows authorities to block entry, cancel visas, and remove foreigners who make discriminatory statements or attack Argentina’s national identity.
The move comes after weeks of criticism from football fans, celebrities, and social media users over claims that controversial refereeing decisions during the World Cup favoured Argentina and its star player, Lionel Messi.
According to Milei’s office, the government created new grounds under Argentina’s immigration law to take action against anyone who encourages hostility toward Argentines or disrespects national symbols.
“In light of recent displays of hostility toward the Argentine Republic and Argentines, the national government reaffirms that the defense of the nation, its citizens and its symbols is non-negotiable,” the president’s office stated.
The statement added that anyone who attacks Argentina would not receive a welcome in the country.
The decision has added more tension to the World Cup drama, which has already attracted FIFA’s attention. The football body recently opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association over a scuffle, alleged racist abuse, and fan misconduct.
FIFA also launched an investigation into players who displayed a banner supporting Argentina’s claim over the British-controlled Falkland Islands after their semifinal victory against England.
Milei has described the criticism against Argentina as a coordinated “anti-Argentina campaign.” He has also accused political groups in Brazil, Mexico, and the United States of backing efforts to damage his administration, although he provided no evidence for the claims.
The accusations have increased diplomatic tensions between Argentina and Brazil, with relations between the neighbouring countries facing fresh strain.
As the debate continues, Milei’s latest move has sparked discussions over national pride, free speech, and the limits of government action during a highly emotional World Cup period.
