Kogi In Shock As Catholic Priest Is Allegedly Killed
The Catholic community in Kogi State is mourning after unknown attackers reportedly killed Rev. Fr. Samuel Opeyemi Oyetoro in Ajaokuta.
Reports say the attackers stabbed the priest several times before they left his body by the roadside on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
Fr. Oyetoro came from Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State. He also had roots in Ayetoro, Ijumu Local Government Area.
The priest served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Egbe, until his death.
Authorities have not revealed the full details of the incident. Security agencies have also not released an official statement on the case.
The Catholic Diocese of Lokoja confirmed the priest’s death through an official statement.
The diocese asked priests, religious leaders, and Catholic faithful to pray for Fr. Oyetoro’s soul. It also requested prayers for his parents, siblings, parishioners, and the entire diocese.
“We kindly request all priests, religious and Laity to pray for the peaceful repose of his soul during their Holy Masses and personal prayers and to pray for strength and consolation for his aged parents, siblings, parishioners and their entire Diocese of Lokoja during this time of grief,” the statement read.
The news has caused sadness among worshippers and residents of Kogi State. Many people now await further updates as authorities look into the circumstances surrounding the priest’s death.
