Cristiano Ronaldo Hints at Retirement After 2026 Season
Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that his legendary football career could come to an end sooner than many fans expected.
The Portugal captain has suggested that 2026 could “probably” be his final year as a professional footballer.
Ronaldo made the revelation during an interview with Vogue published on Sunday.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” the 41-year-old said.
The announcement comes as Ronaldo continues to approach the final stage of his playing career.
His contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr currently runs until June 2027. However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has previously admitted that retirement is getting closer.
He had also said last November that he expected to play for another one or two years.
Ronaldo confirmed at the time that the 2026 World Cup would be his final appearance at the tournament.
Portugal exited the competition after losing to Spain last month. Ronaldo did not reveal a specific retirement date after the defeat.
His latest comments, however, suggest that he could now be preparing to walk away from professional football before the end of his current contract.
Ronaldo prepares for life after football
The football icon also revealed that he has already started thinking about what comes next.
Ronaldo said he has his future “all mapped out” and expects to have plenty of activities to keep him occupied.
“I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard,” he told Vogue.
The Portugal star said football could leave a major gap in his life once he retires.
He therefore plans to fill his time with different activities. These include travelling, spending more time with his family and enjoying padel.
He also reflected on the sacrifices that came with building his extraordinary career.
“Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice,” Ronaldo said.
A remarkable career
Ronaldo began his professional journey with Sporting in 2002.
He later established himself as one of football’s biggest stars during celebrated spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus.
After briefly returning to Manchester United, he moved to Al Nassr and became one of the biggest figures in Saudi Arabian football.
Now, after more than two decades at the highest level, Ronaldo appears to be preparing for the next chapter.
If 2026 does become his final year, football could soon say goodbye to one of its most decorated and recognisable players.
