APC Rejects Osun Election Result, Disputes Adeleke’s Victory
The All Progressives Congress, APC, has refused to accept Ademola Adeleke’s victory in the Osun State governorship election.
The party says it does not believe Adeleke secured the highest number of valid votes.
Oluwole Oke, the APC’s Director-General for the Osun governorship campaign, made the position known during an interview with Arise News on Monday, August 17.
Oke said the party would not rush to congratulate Adeleke.
He explained that the APC is still reviewing the election results and other records from the process.
“We won’t be under any sort of pressure to easily reach out to congratulate Senator Ademola Adeleke. We do not agree with the declaration of INEC,” Oke said.
He added that the party believes Adeleke did not secure the highest number of valid votes.
Oke said the APC would complete a thorough review before deciding on its next move.
INEC declared Adeleke the winner after the August 15 governorship election.
The Accord Party candidate polled 511,067 votes to defeat APC’s Bola Oyebamiji, who secured 444,815 votes.
ADC candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Adeleke also won in 19 of Osun State’s 30 local government areas.
Oyebamiji won the remaining 11 local government areas.
The results gave Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes.
Despite the figures announced by INEC, the APC maintains that it does not accept the declaration.
The party is now studying the election records before deciding whether to take further action.
Oke’s comments suggest that the APC could challenge the result after completing its review of the election.
The development means the outcome of the Osun governorship election remains a major point of contention between the ruling party in the state and the APC.
