ABSU Suspends Lecturer Over Post on Keke Riders’ Earnings
A Facebook post about the salaries of university professors has landed an Abia State University lecturer in trouble, after the institution announced his suspension and launched an investigation into his comments.
ABSU suspended Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze after he made claims about professors’ earnings on Facebook.
Nwaeze lectures in the Department of Economics, Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences.
In his post, he claimed that some ABSU professors earn less than N400,000 monthly.
He also said some commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke riders, earn more than professors at the university.
ABSU management took issue with the publication. The university described the posts as “inimical” to its interests.
Chijioke Nwogu, the university’s Public Relations Officer and Deputy Registrar, signed the suspension statement.
The university released the statement on Thursday, August 13.
ABSU has also set up an investigative panel to examine the matter.
The panel will review Nwaeze’s Facebook post and the circumstances surrounding it. It will also determine the appropriate next steps.
The lecturer’s comments have sparked fresh debate about university lecturers’ salaries in Nigeria.
The comparison with Keke riders has also drawn attention online.
Nwaeze’s post focused on the earnings of professors at ABSU. However, it has also raised wider questions about the financial realities of academics and workers in other professions.
For now, the investigative panel will determine what happens next.
The Facebook post that triggered the suspension has also continued to circulate online.
