What began as an ordinary summer evening in Lincoln, United Kingdom, ended in heartbreak for a Nigerian family whose son would never return home. Tragedy in the UK: 16-Year-Old Nigerian Teen Dies After Lake Rescue Attempt.
Lincolnshire Police have identified the teenager as Iretomiwa Abiodun Micheal, popularly known as Tomiwa, who died after getting into difficulty at Swanholme Lakes on 9 July 2026. He was just 16 years old.
Emergency services were called to the popular lake at about 5:48 p.m. after reports of a safety concern. Police, firefighters, and paramedics rushed to the scene and managed to rescue Tomiwa from the water. He initially showed signs of responding to treatment, giving hope to those trying to save him. However, despite their efforts, he sadly died later in hospital at 8:50 p.m., with his parents by his side.
A file has now been submitted to the coroner for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning.
Beyond the tragic headlines, Tomiwa was remembered as a young man full of life and promise. His parents, Abiodun and Tope Micheal, described him as “vibrant, energetic and unforgettable.” They said his laughter and warmth brightened every room he entered.
The teenager was the eldest of four brothers and was known as a caring protector who constantly encouraged those around him. He played football for Greenbank FC and Lincoln City FC, where he was admired for both his talent and his friendly personality. He was also an active member of his church youth ministry.
“Though his life was short, it was profoundly impactful,” his parents said in an emotional tribute.
Tomiwa is the second teenager to die at Swanholme Lakes this summer, after 15-year-old Declan Sawyer died at the same nature reserve in May, deepening concerns about safety at the location.
