Peter Obi has sparked fresh political debate after accusing Nigeria’s system of protecting politicians from corruption allegations once they join the ruling party.
The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) made the claim during an interview on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired on Sunday night, July 26.
Obi criticised Nigeria’s political structure, arguing that most parties lack clear ideologies and often focus more on personal interests than public service.
According to the former Anambra State governor, political loyalty has become more important than accountability. He claimed that some politicians facing corruption allegations appear to escape scrutiny after moving to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“For me, there is no political party in Nigeria today that has an ideology. There is none. Otherwise, the ideology of the APC would be that if you are corrupt and you move to the APC, you are no longer corrupt,” Obi said.
He argued that Nigeria needs leaders with competence, integrity and compassion rather than politicians who switch parties for personal advantage.
Obi also accused the ruling party of weakening opposition groups. He alleged that challenges affecting parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and the former Labour Party (LP) were part of a wider effort to reduce opposition influence.
“The president said it, and it is happening. When opposition parties are having problems, that is his wish. Because of it, they are destroying the judiciary,” Obi alleged.
The former governor promised that, if elected president, he would protect opposition parties and allow them to operate freely without government interference.
Meanwhile, Obi dismissed claims that endorsements from state governors would guarantee President Bola Tinubu victory in the 2027 election. He argued that governors’ support does not always represent the true.
