After days in detention and intense public scrutiny, controversial Nigerian TikTok star DJ Chicken has regained his freedom.
The content creator, whose real name is Ademola Abiodun, left detention after meeting the bail conditions set by a Lagos Magistrate Court. The case stems from alleged threats made against Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu.
DJ Chicken’s lawyer, Rotimi Stephen, confirmed the release on Tuesday, July 21, through an Instagram Story. He also shared a video urging his client not to discuss the case publicly because the court is still hearing it.
Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher Omoyele Sowore also announced the release on X. He said DJ Chicken had reunited with his family, friends, and loved ones.
Authorities arrested DJ Chicken after a video circulated online. In the clip, he allegedly threatened Seyi Tinubu if President Tinubu sought re-election. He later withdrew the statement after many Nigerians criticised the comment.
Police arraigned him before a Magistrate Court in the Ogba area of Lagos State. Prosecutors filed three charges against him, including alleged violations of the Cybercrimes Act, breach of peace, and making threats to kill.
DJ Chicken pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted him N1 million bail and ordered him to provide two sureties in the same amount. One surety must be a civil servant, while the other must be a community leader with landed property in Lagos. The court also required tax clearance certificates, utility bills, NIN details, and LASSRA registration. In addition, one surety must be a blood relative.
The court has adjourned the case until August 3, 2026. Although DJ Chicken has returned home, he still faces trial as the legal proceedings continue.
