Man Jailed for Breaking Into Girlfriend’s Mother’s Home Over Gifts
What started as an attempt to reclaim gifts from a long-term relationship ended with a prison sentence and a painful separation for a Ghanaian man who says he acted out of frustration and love.
Bismark Aduah, 28, is currently serving time at the Winneba Local Prison after a court convicted him of theft for breaking into his girlfriend’s mother’s room.
Speaking during an interview with Crime Check, Bismark said he had been in a relationship with his girlfriend, Rebecca, for nine years. The couple had also lived together in Ashaiman for the past two years. According to him, Rebecca’s mother strongly opposed the relationship and never accepted him as her daughter’s partner.
Bismark explained that he and Rebecca later returned to the mother’s house to retrieve items he had bought for her during their relationship. In the process, they allegedly broke the door and lock before taking the belongings to Rebecca’s father’s residence.
The incident quickly escalated when Rebecca’s mother reported the matter to the authorities. Police arrested both Bismark and Rebecca, and they were subsequently detained.
Bismark said the Afransi Court sentenced him to five months imprisonment and also imposed a GH¢1,560 fine. He disclosed that he had already spent two weeks in custody but had not been able to raise the money required to pay the fine and secure his release.
Rebecca received a lighter sentence of one month and two weeks in prison. However, Bismark said he paid her fine, which led to her release from custody.
His story has sparked conversations online about relationships, family approval, and the consequences of taking matters into one’s own hands when emotions run high.
