For many people, church is the first place they turn when life gets difficult. For Nigerian comedian AY Makun, however, it became the one place he struggled to enter.
The comedian has revealed why he stopped attending church for a period. He said he never lost his faith in God. Instead, negative stories about him made him fear judgment from other worshippers.
AY explained that he worried people would whisper or make assumptions when they saw him in church. Rather than face that discomfort, he chose to worship online from time to time. Even during that season, he said his faith in Jesus Christ remained strong.
Things changed when he found another church that welcomed him warmly. The experience gave him hope, and he believed he had found a place he could truly call home.
That hope did not last long. Church leaders later removed him from an upcoming programme because they feared how the public might react to his presence. The decision deeply disappointed him.
The incident made AY question whether public opinion now carries more weight than compassion. He wondered if the church should focus on restoring people instead of worrying about public perception.
Despite his experience, AY stressed that he was not attacking pastors or asking anyone to ignore their opinions about him. Instead, he encouraged Christians to reflect on the church’s true purpose. He believes the church should offer truth, grace and restoration to everyone, especially those facing difficult moments.
“I still believe in Jesus Christ as a Christian,” AY said. He also referenced Matthew 11:28, which invites those who are weary and burdened to come to Christ for rest.
He ended his message with a question that has sparked widespread discussion online: “Who is the church really for?” The question has encouraged many people to reflect on faith, forgiveness and whether churches truly welcome those who need grace the most.
