Trump Declares Iran War Accord Over After Gulf Strikes

The Trump Iran war accord has effectively collapsed after President Donald Trump declared the interim agreement with Tehran “over” following fresh Iranian attacks on US military bases in the Gulf, dramatically escalating the US-Iran conflict and raising fears of a wider Middle East war.

President Donald Trump said the Iran war accord signed in June was no longer valid after Iran launched retaliatory strikes against American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait. The attacks came in response to recent US military operations targeting Iranian positions following assaults on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, Trump said he had no interest in reviving the Iran war accord, insisting Tehran’s actions had destroyed any remaining trust between both countries.

The renewed US-Iran conflict has dealt a significant blow to diplomatic efforts aimed at ending months of hostilities that began after US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran earlier this year. The interim agreement, signed on June 17, was intended to serve as the foundation for a broader peace settlement before the latest Iran Gulf strikes reignited military tensions.

Global financial markets reacted immediately to the collapse of the Trump Iran war accord. Investors fled to safe-haven assets as oil prices surged on fears that instability around the Strait of Hormuz could disrupt global energy supplies.

Brent crude rose nearly five per cent, climbing to approximately $78 per barrel, while stock markets across the Gulf and other regions weakened amid growing concerns over prolonged conflict.

Shipping companies also became increasingly cautious, with several oil and liquefied natural gas tankers reportedly reversing course rather than entering the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for attacks on US military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait and said they had also shot down an American MQ-9 drone during the operation.

US officials said American forces had earlier struck Iranian air defence systems, anti-ship missile batteries, surveillance facilities, drone launch sites, and Revolutionary Guard naval assets. According to US Central Command, the operation was carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial shipping despite the existing Iran war accord.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte defended the US military response, while European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned Iran’s attacks, warning that the latest violence had further undermined hopes of restoring the Iran war accord.

Iranian officials rejected Washington’s position, accusing the United States of violating the ceasefire through renewed military action, tighter oil sanctions, and continued pressure on Tehran’s strategic interests.

Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned of a “severe response” to further US actions, while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf insisted Tehran would not bow to foreign pressure or intimidation.

Iranian state media later reported explosions near Kharg Island, Qeshm Island, Sirik, and Bandar Abbas, although US officials said the latest military operation focused primarily on disabling Iran’s military infrastructure rather than targeting civilian facilities.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the focal point of the crisis, with analysts warning that any prolonged disruption could threaten global oil supplies and intensify the US-Iran conflict.

Adding to tensions, the United States revoked a temporary licence allowing limited Iranian oil exports, prompting Tehran to accuse Washington of breaching the Iran war accord and warning that it would take all necessary measures to protect its national security and strategic interests.
