A tragic incident has shocked residents of Oro Ekpo Estate, Ada George, in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State after a middle-aged man was arrested for allegedly killing his father during a dispute linked to property.
The suspect was reportedly arrested by operatives of the Rivers State Police Command for allegedly attacking his father, retired Marine Captain David Nwoke, with a machete on Sunday morning, July 5, following a disagreement over property and inheritance.
According to reports, the deceased had planned to relocate to his hometown in the South-East and invited his children to inform them of his decision and discuss the distribution of some of his belongings.
During the meeting, the suspect, who is the son of the deceased’s second wife, allegedly requested one of his father’s cars. However, his request was reportedly rejected by the retired Marine Captain.
Sources said the refusal allegedly angered the suspect, who was accused of planning an attack against his father.
Residents of the area claimed that on the day of the incident, the deceased had gone out for his usual morning walk. After returning home, he was allegedly attacked as he was about to enter his room to freshen up.
The suspect was said to have emerged from hiding and allegedly attacked his father several times with a machete, leaving him with serious injuries that later proved fatal.
The incident reportedly caused panic in the community, as the housemaid raised an alarm and alerted neighbours, who immediately contacted the police at the Rumuokpani Police Division.
Confirming the arrest, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Agabe Blessing, said the case was under investigation. She added that the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
The incident has sparked concerns among residents over rising cases of family disputes turning violent, with authorities urging citizens to seek peaceful solutions to conflicts.
