Newlywed Couple Dies in Greek Island Helicopter Crash
A British couple on their honeymoon have died in a helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos.
The couple, identified as Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, died alongside their Greek pilot after the private helicopter crashed on Monday, August 17, 2026.
According to Greek police, the helicopter went down just metres from a landing pad on the popular holiday island.
The newlyweds had reportedly travelled by helicopter from Markopoulo, a village near Athens, to Sifnos as part of their honeymoon.
The crash happened shortly before the aircraft’s scheduled landing time of 18:15 local time, according to a senior police official who spoke to The Times.
Sifnos Deputy Mayor Manolis Foundoulakis arrived at the scene shortly after the crash.
Speaking to local news outlet Newsit, he said there was almost “nothing left” of the helicopter after the impact.
Foundoulakis said residents saw the aircraft come down just metres from their homes.
He also said locals had noticed a “bizarre engine noise” coming from the helicopter as it approached the landing area.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene after the crash.
Firefighters also battled a blaze that broke out following the incident. They had extinguished the flames by Monday evening.
Authorities recovered two of the victims from the wreckage, while they found the third victim a short distance away.
The cause of the crash remains unknown as investigators work to establish what happened.
The BBC has contacted the UK Foreign Office, Greek authorities and the aviation company involved for further information.
Cromie’s employer, asset management firm Blackstone, also expressed shock over his death and that of his wife.
The company described Cromie as a “beloved” employee and offered condolences following the tragedy.
The deaths have left the couple’s families and loved ones mourning as Greek authorities continue their investigation into the fatal honeymoon crash.
