Jay Jay Okocha, Obi Mikel Reveal Stories Behind Their Names
Two of Nigeria’s most celebrated former football stars, Jay Jay Okocha and John Obi Mikel, have opened up about the unexpected stories behind the names that became famous around the world.
The former Super Eagles captains shared the stories during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast.
For Okocha, the name “Jay Jay” began as a nickname linked to his younger brother, James.
The football legend explained that several members of his family played football while growing up. Since some of them shared the name Austin, people in their neighbourhood needed a way to tell them apart.
Okocha said people began referring to him as “Austin Jay Jay’s brother.”
The nickname eventually stuck.
When he later travelled outside Nigeria, Okocha noticed that people often struggled to pronounce his birth name, Augustine.
“Jay Jay” proved much easier for people to say, so he decided to make the nickname official.
“‘Jay Jay’ was a lot easier. So, I said I might as well adopt the name, and I put it in my passport,” he explained.
According to Okocha, the name is now officially part of his identity.
Mikel’s story also began with a mistake.
The former Chelsea midfielder revealed that his original name was Michael.
During an Under-17 tournament, organisers asked players to submit their names for printing on their jerseys.
Mikel submitted “Michael,” but the shirt came back with “Mikel” printed on it.
Instead of correcting the error, the midfielder decided to keep the new spelling.
“I was like, you know what? I’m just gonna keep it,” Mikel recalled.
He said the new name also sounded better to him.
Mikel went on to have an impressive tournament and eventually embraced the name permanently.
Like Okocha, he later added the name to his passport.
Both former internationals therefore ended up carrying names that began in very different ways.
One came from a childhood nickname, while the other resulted from an administrative mistake.
Yet both names would eventually become closely associated with two of Nigeria’s most recognisable football stars.
