A Nigerian-American poet has earned a major literary honour in the United States.
Daniel Umemezie has been named the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate.
His appointment has drawn praise from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria, which celebrated the young poet’s achievement on its social media platforms.
Umemezie becomes the 10th young poet to hold the prestigious title. He is also the second Nigerian-American to receive the honour.
He follows Salome Agbaroji, who made history in 2023 as the first Nigerian-American to become U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate.
Umemezie has built a reputation for using poetry to explore important themes. His work examines heritage, identity and the complexities of growing up Nigerian-American.

“Meet Daniel Umemezie, the 2026-2027 U.S. National Youth Poet Laureate — the 10th poet to hold this prestigious title, and the second Nigerian-American to do so,” the mission wrote.
It also praised Umemezie as a gifted young voice whose poetry connects heritage, identity and the Nigerian-American experience.
The mission described his achievement as an example of “American Excellence.” It said his success shows how young people can use creativity to thrive, lead and inspire others.
Umemezie’s appointment has also sparked celebration among those who see his achievement as an important moment for Nigerian-American representation.
His success follows Agbaroji’s historic appointment three years ago and further highlights the growing influence of young Nigerian-American literary voices.
