Liverpool Sign Barcelona Captain Ronald Araujo on Loan
Liverpool have officially welcomed Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo to Anfield.
The Reds have signed the Uruguay international on a season-long loan from the Spanish giants.
The deal also includes an option for Liverpool to make the move permanent. The club can reportedly sign Araujo for £47 million at the end of the season.
The 27-year-old defender arrived on Merseyside on Sunday afternoon. He has since completed his medical and finalised the move.
Araujo will wear the No. 33 shirt at Liverpool.
The defender could hardly hide his excitement after completing the transfer.
“I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy,” Araujo told Liverpoolfc.com.
He also spoke about joining a club with Liverpool’s rich history.
“I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history,” he said.
Araujo revealed that Liverpool’s interest quickly convinced him to make the move.
“As soon as I heard that interest from Liverpool, everything went into action really, really quickly,” he said.
The move marks a major new chapter for the experienced defender.
Araujo missed the World Cup because of injury. He now hopes to put that setback behind him and make an immediate impact in England.
The Uruguay star is expected to train with his new teammates this week.
His arrival also gives Andoni Iraola another experienced option in defence.
Liverpool recently lost Ibrahima Konaté to Real Madrid. The club also has concerns over the fitness of 21-year-old defender Jérémy Jacquet.
Araujo’s arrival could therefore prove crucial as Liverpool prepare for another demanding campaign.
The big question now is whether the Barcelona captain can shine at Anfield and turn his loan spell into a permanent move.
