Nollywood actress Judy Austin has taken legal action against her colleague and co-wife, Rita Edochie, over alleged defamatory statements.
Judy filed a lawsuit at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Judicial Division. In the suit, she accused Rita of making statements that she considers defamatory.
According to the Writ of Summons, Judy is seeking N1 billion in general damages from Rita.
She has also asked the court to order Rita to publish a full and unreserved retraction and apology. Judy wants the apology published in at least two widely circulated national newspapers.
She is also asking Rita to publish the retraction across her social media platforms.
In addition, Judy wants the court to order Rita to remove the alleged defamatory statements from all online platforms. She is also seeking an injunction to stop Rita from making or circulating further statements that Judy considers defamatory.
The actress is seeking another N50 million to cover the cost of prosecuting the case.
The court papers state that Rita has 30 days from the date she receives the writ to enter an appearance. She can do so personally or through a legal practitioner.
The lawsuit adds a new legal dimension to the long-running public tensions surrounding the two actresses.
The allegations remain claims at this stage, and the court will determine the issues raised in the suit.
