German FA Demands Answers After FIFA Reinstates Banned USA Star Folarin Balogun Following Trump’s Intervention
The German Football Federation (DFB) has called on FIFA to provide an immediate explanation after reports emerged that the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun was lifted following alleged intervention by U.S. President Donald Trump.
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said the world football governing body must clarify whether political influence played a role in overturning Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension.
“FIFA should now issue a prompt statement regarding reports that the decision to suspend the red card shown to the American player Folarin Balogun was preceded by a telephone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino,” Neuendorf said in a statement on Monday.
He warned that any perception of political interference could damage the integrity of football’s biggest tournament.
“The impression that there has been active political interference in sport must be dispelled swiftly and conclusively. The integrity of the competition and the credibility of FIFA are at stake,” he added.
Balogun was shown a red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 and was expected to miss the Americans’ Round of 16 clash against Belgium under FIFA’s automatic suspension rules.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that it had suspended the ban for a one-year probationary period, making Balogun immediately eligible to play. The decision sparked controversy after several U.S. media outlets, citing sources familiar with the matter, reported that President Trump had personally called FIFA president Gianni Infantino before the ruling.
Following FIFA’s announcement, Trump praised the decision on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!”
Neither FIFA nor the White House has officially confirmed or denied that any conversation between Trump and Infantino took place, leaving questions surrounding the decision unanswered.
