Police Arrest Three Suspects Over Kogi Teacher’s Death

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested three suspects in connection with the death of a teacher in Kogi State, following allegations that she was assaulted after disciplining a pupil at a primary school.
The suspects were arrested over the alleged culpable homicide of Mariam Usman, a staff member of Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, in Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the teacher died after allegedly suffering multiple assaults linked to disciplinary action taken against an 11-year-old pupil.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, said one of the suspects, Abdullahi Isiaka, allegedly attacked the teacher at her residence on June 17, 2026, over disciplinary measures she imposed on his son during school hours.
The police spokesperson said the teacher was later attacked the same day while on her way to the mosque for prayers by another suspect, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo.
“Further investigation revealed that on June 18, 2026, Ojonojima Mary, younger sister to Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, went to Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School, Ugbamaka, where she assaulted the deceased at her workplace,” the statement read.
Following the alleged attacks, Mariam Usman was initially treated at Grace Clinic, Ugbamaka, before being referred to Eleojo Clinic, Okpo, for further medical care. However, she later died from her injuries on June 25, 2026.
The police said their investigation established a prima facie case of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide against the three suspects — Ojonojima Mary, Ramatu Isiaka Eleojo, and Abdullahi Isiaka.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction following the conclusion of investigations.
The Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, commended detectives from the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for their efforts in handling the case.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to ensuring justice in violent crime cases and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
The commissioner also encouraged members of the public to provide credible and timely information to assist law enforcement agencies in preventing crime and improving security across the state.
