Jonathan Denies N500bn Offer to Challenge Obi in 2027
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has broken his silence over claims that he was offered N500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against Peter Obi, describing the allegation as false, fabricated, and aimed at creating unnecessary political controversy.

Jonathan, through a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, dismissed reports suggesting that he was approached with a financial offer to enter the presidential race as a strategy to divide votes in Nigeria’s South-South region.
Eze said the allegation was completely baseless and lacked any evidence to support the claim. He questioned the credibility of the report, noting that it failed to provide key details such as when or where Jonathan allegedly made the statement, the identity of those who supposedly made the offer, or any witnesses connected to the alleged arrangement.
According to the statement, the report was a deliberate attempt to mislead Nigerians and create political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Jonathan was never involved in the ‘N500 billion offer to divide the South’s votes against Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections,’” Eze stated.
The former president’s media aide urged Nigerians to disregard the report and be cautious when sharing unverified political claims, especially as the country moves closer to another election cycle.
He warned that election periods often attract misinformation, fake narratives, and false statements attributed to public figures, stressing the importance of relying on credible sources.
Eze further clarified that Jonathan has never made any statement indicating that he received money to contest the presidency or to work against any political candidate.
He maintained that the former president remains uninvolved in the alleged scheme and rejected attempts to link him with what he described as unfounded political narratives capable of misleading the public and heightening tensions ahead of the 2027 elections.
