Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Quit Over School Abductions
Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over School Abductions, Questions 2027 Ambition

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has launched a fresh criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of failing to protect Nigerian citizens amid rising insecurity and calling on the President to either step aside or reconsider his 2027 re-election plans.
Obi made the statement following his visit to Ibadan, where he met with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over the abduction of schoolchildren in the state, who he said had remained in captivity for more than 50 days.
Describing the incident as a “Nigerian tragedy,” the former Anambra State governor said the prolonged captivity of the children reflected what he described as a failure of leadership, empathy, and urgency from the Federal Government.
“The ultimate cost of uncompassionate leadership, as evident in the country today, is turning citizens’ frustration into deep, volatile resentment,” Obi said.
He disclosed that he had earlier appealed to the abductors to release the children and had spoken with Governor Makinde on two occasions to express solidarity, stressing that insecurity should be treated as a national concern beyond political differences.
Obi said he visited Ibadan on July 3 alongside economist Pat Utomi to support the governor after more than seven weeks without the victims’ rescue. According to him, his discussions with Makinde revealed that President Tinubu had not personally contacted the governor regarding the incident.
“I discovered that, contrary to my assumption that they had been in regular communication over the matter, Governor Seyi Makinde had not received a single call from President Bola Tinubu,” Obi stated.
The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate also compared the situation to the Chibok schoolgirls abduction during former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, recalling that Tinubu had been among critics who demanded Jonathan’s resignation over his response to the crisis.
Obi further claimed that more than 13 school kidnapping incidents had occurred since Tinubu assumed office, accusing the administration of failing to show enough concern for victims and their families.
He argued that the safety of Nigerian children and citizens should be the government’s highest priority, describing the worsening insecurity as a major test of leadership.
