81st UNGA: Kebbi Gov Joins Nigeria’s Delegation in New York
Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has joined Nigeria’s delegation in New York for the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, with investment and development opportunities expected to feature prominently in his engagements.
Idris is attending the global gathering alongside Vice President Kashim Shettima, who is representing President Bola Tinubu at the General Assembly.
The governor’s presence was announced in a statement released on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Ahmed Idris.
The 81st UNGA began on September 8, 2026, with this year’s discussions centred on the theme, “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
The session has brought together representatives of countries across the world to deliberate on issues such as peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, human rights, technological advancement and international cooperation.
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Bianca Ojukwu, reportedly outlined the country’s programme of activities during a briefing attended by members of the delegation.
Vice President Shettima is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement during the General Debate on Thursday, September 24.
For Governor Idris, the international gathering provides a platform to showcase opportunities in Kebbi and engage potential investors and development partners.
His delegation is expected to hold discussions with international organisations and other stakeholders on partnerships that could support projects and economic development in the state.
The governor is also expected to participate in conversations covering peace and security, sustainable development and investment.
One of the major engagements on the schedule is the proposed launch of the Northwest Peace, Security and Development Framework for 2026–2030.
Idris is further expected at the 2026 SDG Roundtable Discussion, Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, African-Caribbean High-Level Interactive Dialogue and Nigeria Investment Forum.
The statement said the participation of state governors and other officials would strengthen Nigeria’s engagement with international partners and create opportunities for investment and development cooperation.
Other governors attending the UNGA include Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, Nasarawa’s Abdullahi Sule, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
Also participating are Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake, Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Doris Uzoka-Anite and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim.
