Woman Arrested After Allegedly Stealing Newborn From Benue
Police have arrested a woman accused of allegedly taking a newborn baby from a healthcare centre in Gboko, Benue State.
The disturbing incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday. The baby had just been delivered and was receiving care with his mother in a ward.
According to reports, the suspect allegedly approached the mother and claimed she was a nurse.
She reportedly told the mother that she needed to examine the newborn. The mother then handed the baby to her.
The woman allegedly carried the baby towards the labour room.
However, the baby’s grandmother became suspicious and followed closely behind. She reportedly stood at the entrance of the labour room.
The suspect allegedly asked her to step back. She reportedly assured the grandmother that everything was under control.
Shortly afterwards, the woman allegedly disappeared with the baby.
The development triggered a frantic search for the newborn.
Activist Zege Orkwande later confirmed that authorities had tracked down and arrested a female suspect at Adekaa in Gboko.
He said officers tracked the suspect from Tarka Local Government Area after receiving useful information.
“Following good intel, she was tracked through Okada from Tarka LGA and arrested in Gboko,” Orkwande said.
He also disclosed that about nine people had been arrested and detained at the Benue State Police Command in Makurdi.
The police have since launched an investigation into the case.
Benue State Police spokesperson DSP Peter Aondongu confirmed the incident. He said the case occurred at a Family Healthcare Centre in Gboko.
According to him, investigators transferred the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further probing.
However, police had not independently confirmed the reported arrest of the main suspect at the time of the report.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the newborn’s disappearance.
