Trump Extends G20 Invitation to Putin for Miami Summit
US President Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the upcoming G20 summit in Miami.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio disclosed the invitation on Wednesday after meeting Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
According to Rubio, the summit could give Putin an opportunity to meet Trump and interact with other world leaders. He also expressed hope that the Russian leader would accept the invitation.
The development comes as Washington continues diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a way to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Rubio said direct engagement remains important, even when countries disagree on major issues. He noted that discussions between opposing sides could help create opportunities to address difficult international problems.
However, the invitation does not mean Trump and Putin have agreed to hold a separate meeting in Miami. No such meeting has been formally announced.
Rubio’s announcement followed his discussions with Lavrov at the UN. The meeting did not produce a publicly announced breakthrough in efforts to end the conflict.
Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to seek international support as fighting persists. Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov told the UN Security Council that Moscow would not agree to halt what Russia calls its “special military operation.”
The Trump administration has also been pushing for a limited agreement covering attacks on energy infrastructure. Rubio said such a deal would not end the war but could reduce the damage and provide room for wider negotiations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv would be willing to stop attacks on Russian energy facilities if Moscow takes the same step.
Trump and Putin last met in Alaska in 2025. A possible meeting in Miami would provide another opportunity for direct talks, although Russia has yet to publicly confirm whether Putin will attend the G20 summit.
