Tebas Hits Back at Real Madrid Over Refereeing Row
Real Madrid’s latest derby defeat has opened another heated refereeing debate in Spain. La Liga president Javier Tebas has now rejected claims of a conspiracy against the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Atletico Madrid on Sunday. The defeat sparked fresh complaints from the Madrid camp.
Coach Jose Mourinho added fuel to the debate after the match. He took printed screenshots to his press conference. The images showed two tackles by Atletico players that he believed deserved red cards.
Tebas responded on Tuesday. He reacted to a pro-Real Madrid article on social media. The La Liga chief accused its supporters of reviving an old narrative about refereeing decisions.
Tebas has often clashed with Real Madrid and club president Florentino Perez. This latest exchange adds another chapter to their long-running disagreements.
The La Liga president also challenged the idea that referees could favour clubs because of their commercial value.
He acknowledged Real Madrid’s importance to the competition. However, he rejected the suggestion that La Liga would have little value without the club.
Tebas argued that such a view ignores the league’s other teams and their supporters.
“The competition belongs to no one,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tebas pointed to Real Madrid’s difficult start to the season. The derby loss left the club six points behind Barcelona, the defending champions and early leaders.
He also rejected claims that referees had received instructions to make decisions against Real Madrid.
According to Tebas, blaming officials could distract attention from the team’s own problems.
“That narrative serves as an excuse to cover up other shortcomings that are plain to see in these first matches of the season,” he said.
Tebas added that blaming a conspiracy was easier than explaining what happened on the pitch.
The dispute comes during a difficult period for Madrid. The club has struggled for consistency at the start of Mourinho’s second spell.
Mourinho returned to the Santiago Bernabéu during the summer. He took charge with the task of ending Real Madrid’s two-year wait for a major trophy.
For now, the club faces pressure to improve its results. The growing dispute over refereeing has only added to the attention surrounding the team.
