Super Falcons of Nigeria lose automatic World Cup ticket
The Super Falcons of Nigeria have suffered a heartbreaking setback in their quest for another Women’s World Cup appearance.
Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The defeat ended the Falcons’ hopes of securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Cameroon struck early through Myriam Maéva Nyadjou Wamen, who found the breakthrough in the 19th minute at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
The Super Falcons fought hard for a way back into the game. They controlled large portions of the match, especially during the closing stages. However, Cameroon stood firm and protected their narrow lead until the final whistle.
Nigeria created pressure but could not find the crucial equaliser. The final whistle therefore confirmed a painful quarter-final exit for the defending African champions.
The result also ended Nigeria’s defence of their WAFCON crown. More painfully, the Falcons must now fight through the remaining qualification route if they want to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Nigeria had entered the tournament chasing a record-extending 10th Women’s World Cup appearance. Their unexpected defeat to Cameroon has now made that dream more difficult.
For Cameroon, however, the victory keeps their continental campaign alive. The Indomitable Lionesses have booked their place in the WAFCON semi-finals.
They will face hosts Morocco, who defeated South Africa 2-1 in their quarter-final.
For the Super Falcons, it is a bitter end to their title defence and a painful reminder of how quickly football dreams can change.
