Nigeria Advances Deal for 12 US Attack Helicopters
Nigeria’s plan to boost its military airpower has taken a major step forward with the Nigerian Air Force moving ahead with the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States.
The latest development followed a beam signing ceremony between the Nigerian Air Force and Bell Textron in Amarillo, Texas, where the two sides advanced the helicopter procurement programme.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led the Nigerian delegation at the event.
The ceremony forms part of the ongoing defence cooperation between the Nigerian and United States governments and is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s military capabilities.
NAF spokesperson, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, announced the development in a statement on Monday.
He said the acquisition reflects the Federal Government’s wider efforts to modernise the Armed Forces and improve the country’s ability to respond to security threats.
Speaking during the ceremony, Aneke said the AH-1Z Viper would add significant capability to the Nigerian military.
He said the programme was part of efforts to build a professional and highly motivated Air Force capable of delivering effective air support while working closely with ground forces.
Aneke also emphasised that acquiring new platforms was only part of the objective. He said the capabilities must ultimately improve the military’s effectiveness in carrying out national security operations.
The Chief of the Air Staff thanked President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his continued support and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s defence architecture.
He also appreciated the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other partners involved in the AH-1Z Viper programme.
According to Aneke, continued technical cooperation, defence partnerships and capability development will be critical to the successful implementation of the programme.
The Nigerian delegation also toured Bell Textron’s facility and inspected the production line for the AH-1Z Viper helicopters.
The move comes shortly after the Nigerian Air Force received five new helicopters as part of the government’s ongoing military aviation upgrade.
The latest delivery included three AW-109 Trekker B helicopters from Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters produced by Airbus Helicopters.
The two developments highlight the Federal Government’s continuing push to expand the Nigerian Air Force’s fleet and provide the Armed Forces with more modern platforms for national security operations.
