Lionel Messi Set to Take Majority Stake in Spanish Club Eldense
Lionel Messi has reached an agreement in principle to become the majority shareholder of Spanish club Eldense.
The deal would give the Argentine superstar majority ownership of a professional football club in Spain for the first time.
Messi recently acquired Unió Esportiva Cornellà. His proposed investment in Eldense would further expand his growing involvement in Spanish football.
Eldense currently play in LaLiga Hypermotion, Spain’s second division. However, the club has endured a difficult start to the season.
Eldense have collected just two points so far. The team will now look to improve its results while the ownership deal moves forward.
The agreement could become official in the coming days. However, both sides must complete several legal and contractual steps first.
The process includes an extensive financial and legal review known as due diligence. This review will allow Messi and his representatives to assess the club’s financial position, contracts and other key areas before completing the purchase.
The proposed takeover must also receive approval from Spain’s High Council for Sports (CSD).
Until that approval arrives, Messi cannot officially take control of the majority stake.
If the deal goes through, Eldense could gain significant global attention. Messi remains one of the most recognisable figures in world football. His involvement could also create new commercial opportunities for the club.
The potential takeover represents another step in Messi’s activities away from playing football. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has increasingly explored opportunities within the business side of the sport.
For Eldense, however, the immediate focus remains on its performance on the pitch. The club needs to improve its results after collecting only two points this season.
Messi’s potential arrival could therefore bring both financial and international attention to the club as it attempts to turn its season around.
The parties could complete the transaction soon if the due diligence process goes smoothly and the CSD grants the required approval.
