What started as a search for a new direction has turned into one of Isbae U’s most recognisable projects.
The Nigerian content creator, Adebayo Ridwan Abidemi, popularly known as Isbae U, has shared the story behind Curiosity Made Me Ask, revealing that the interview show was born from his desire to break away from the crowded skit-making space.
He made the revelation while speaking with media personality Morayo Afolabi-Brown on The Morayo Show, published on YouTube on Wednesday.
Isbae U said his journey in entertainment did not begin with a clear-cut plan. He experimented with different forms of creativity, including music and acting, before gradually figuring out the direction he wanted to take.
According to him, he eventually became determined to build something that would separate him from the numerous skit creators gaining attention at the time.
That search for originality led him back to a comedy programme he had watched years earlier.
Isbae U recalled seeing Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns and being impressed by its unusual approach to celebrity interviews. The concept sparked an idea in his mind about creating his own version with a Nigerian audience in mind.
That inspiration eventually evolved into Curiosity Made Me Ask.
Rather than relying on the usual celebrity interview formula, Isbae U said he wanted the programme to uncover sides of famous personalities that audiences rarely see.
The concept has since brought him face-to-face with several notable Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, actor Pete Edochie and entertainer Charly Boy.
Isbae U admitted that the confidence seen on the show does not always reflect how he feels before some interviews.
He said meeting older and more established personalities can make him nervous, particularly because of their experience and status. However, he said many of his guests have made the encounters easier by welcoming him and allowing him to express himself freely.
His interview with Obasanjo recently attracted widespread attention online, further placing the show in the spotlight.
For Isbae U, what began as an attempt to find a fresh identity has become a platform for presenting familiar public figures from a less familiar angle.
