FG: No Immediate Plan to Raise Electricity Tariffs
The Federal Government has moved to calm concerns over a possible rise in electricity bills, insisting that no fresh tariff increase is currently being planned.
Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe made the clarification in Abuja on Monday, September 21, while speaking to journalists during an event marking his first 100 days in office.
Tegbe said the issue came to his attention after he received several calls over the weekend following reports that the government was preparing to raise electricity tariffs.
He dismissed the reports, describing them as politically driven claims linked to the approach of the 2027 general elections.
The minister said the government’s attention is instead focused on improving electricity supply and addressing the challenges affecting the power sector.
Tegbe explained that the administration is exploring renewable energy options as part of its broader strategy to expand and strengthen electricity generation and supply.
He also disclosed that the government is carrying out a nationwide audit of power infrastructure.
According to him, the exercise will help identify major deficiencies across the country’s electricity network and establish where urgent improvements are needed.
Tegbe said the findings would guide efforts to address critical gaps and improve the reliability of electricity services for consumers.
The minister’s comments come amid renewed public attention on electricity tariffs and the cost of power in Nigeria.
However, he maintained that increasing tariffs is not the focus of the government at this time, urging Nigerians not to be misled by reports suggesting otherwise.
The government, he said, remains focused on strengthening the power sector and delivering better electricity supply to Nigerians.
