A social media post that sparked controversy and attracted widespread attention has now landed its alleged publisher in court, as the Anambra State Police Command arraigned a man over claims made about Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s family.
The suspect, identified as Ejike Ofoegbu, who is alleged to be the owner and publisher of Igbo Times Magazine and iNews, was arraigned on Monday, July 13, over allegations bordering on the publication of fabricated, false, and defamatory reports involving the governor and his son, Ozonna.
According to the police, the arrest followed a petition accusing the suspect of spreading information considered harmful to the reputation of the governor’s family and capable of causing public disaffection.
The police said Ofoegbu was received from the Department of State Services (DSS), Awka, after which investigations were concluded before he was taken before the court.
The controversy reportedly began after several posts circulated online, containing claims allegedly attributed to Governor Soludo and his son. The publications included statements suggesting that the governor had disowned Ozonna and other alleged remarks concerning the family relationship.
The police described the reports as false and damaging, stating that they were capable of misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension.
Following the backlash, Ofoegbu reportedly withdrew the statements and issued a public apology to Governor Soludo.
However, the matter proceeded to court, where the suspect was arraigned over the allegations. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed that the suspect has been remanded in a correctional facility pending further proceedings.
The case has sparked discussions about the growing impact of misinformation in the digital age, where unverified claims can spread rapidly and affect the reputation of individuals within minutes.
As the legal process continues, the incident serves as another reminder of the responsibility that comes with online publishing and the importance of verifying information before sharing it with the public.
