AY Reveals Why Booking Artistes for Comedy Shows Is Expensive
Booking a major music star for a comedy show is no longer as simple as making a phone call. Nigerian comedian AY has revealed how much artiste appearance fees have changed as the country’s music industry continues to expand globally.
AY discussed the growing cost while speaking about the challenges of booking performers for AY Live. He recalled a time when personal relationships often made it easier to bring top musicians to the event.
According to the comedian, several major Nigerian stars have performed at AY Live over the years. They include Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Tiwa Savage and Olamide.
AY said friendship played a major role in some of those early appearances. Artists were often willing to accept modest payments that covered their logistics.
The situation has changed significantly, he explained. AY claimed that some leading Nigerian musicians now request between ₦80 million and ₦200 million to appear at his comedy show.
He linked the increase to the rapid growth of the Nigerian music industry. Nigerian artists now earn from streaming platforms, international endorsements and other opportunities that pay in foreign currencies.
As a result, AY said musicians no longer depend on comedy events for exposure.
The comedian also claimed that high appearance fees are not limited to established stars. According to him, some emerging artists now request fees of around ₦80 million, despite having less-established careers.
AY noted that personal connections can still make a difference. He said strong relationships with musicians can make it easier to negotiate their appearance at comedy events.
AY Live is an entertainment event created by the comedian. The show combines stand-up comedy with musical performances and other forms of entertainment.
