Arteta Says Brighton Loss Provides Major Lesson for Arsenal
Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came crashing down at Brighton, and Mikel Arteta believes the 3-0 defeat has given his players a valuable reminder of what it takes to compete at the highest level.
The Gunners arrived at the Amex Stadium in strong form but struggled to match Brighton’s intensity throughout the contest.
Pascal Gross put the hosts ahead with a powerful long-range strike before Charalampos Kostoulas extended their advantage before the interval.
Brighton continued to control proceedings after the restart, with Chema Andres making it 3-0 when he headed in from a corner.
The result marked Arsenal’s heaviest defeat in more than three years and ended a seven-match winning run across all competitions.
Arteta made no attempt to hide his disappointment after the final whistle, while also admitting that Brighton were the better side and deserved the points.
According to the Arsenal manager, his players failed to meet several of the fundamental demands required in a Premier League match.
The defeat is particularly significant given the expectations surrounding Arsenal after they ended a 22-year wait for the English league title last season.
The Gunners had also made an impressive start to their latest campaign, winning their first seven matches in all competitions before Brighton brought that run to an end.
For Arteta, however, the setback should serve as a warning rather than erase the progress his team has made.
He described the result as a “big lesson” and stressed that the players must understand what is required to win consistently at this level.
The Spanish coach also defended the work done by his squad since returning from the World Cup. He noted that 18 players had returned from the tournament and praised the team for the number of matches they had won over the previous six or seven weeks.
Arteta said that run had been remarkable, but insisted Saturday’s defeat showed that Arsenal still have important lessons to learn.
The three-week international break now gives the champions an opportunity to regroup and prepare for the demanding fixtures ahead.
