Anambra: APC, APGA Clash Over Progressives Working Together
A fresh political disagreement has emerged in Anambra State after the APC and APGA took opposing positions on claims that both parties are working together ahead of the 2027 elections.
The dispute centres on the phrase “progressives are working together,” which has featured prominently in discussions about Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s political approach and relations between APGA and the APC at the federal level.
The APC has now rejected the suggestion that such cooperation amounts to an alliance between the two parties.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting of APC members in Anambra Central Senatorial District, the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Ben Nwoye, urged supporters to disregard APGA’s claim.
Nwoye described the slogan as a fallacy and alleged that it could mislead President Bola Tinubu as well as APC members.
He said the APC remained focused on its own candidates ahead of the 2027 elections and would work to secure support for Tinubu and other party candidates.
“We urged our supporters not to be deceived by the APGA’s slogan of ‘Progressives are working together’. It is a fallacy,” Nwoye said.
APC senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Uche Ekwunife, echoed the call.
Ekwunife, who is also the South-East Zonal Director of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, said APC members should work towards strong performances for the party in the presidential, National Assembly and state assembly elections.
She urged voters to support Tinubu, arguing that his return would allow his administration to continue its development projects in the South-East.
Ekwunife also asked APC members to remain united and committed as the 2027 elections approach.
APGA, however, has rejected the APC’s position.
The party’s Publicity Secretary, Ejimofor Opara, insisted that the “progressives are working together” message remained valid.
Opara said APGA was not misleading anyone and cited the party’s decision to adopt Tinubu as its presidential candidate as evidence of its cooperation with the President.
He argued that APGA could support Tinubu at the presidential level while maintaining its own political identity and interests in Anambra State.
According to Opara, the party’s support for Tinubu has strengthened the President’s political position in Anambra and the wider South-East.
He said APGA would continue working with the President while remaining committed to its own political platform.
“For us, progressives will work together,” Opara said.
The disagreement comes as political parties continue to position themselves and build alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Anambra emerging as a key focus of the competing strategies.
