Wike Opens Up on Children’s Support for Peter Obi
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has opened up about an unexpected political choice within his family during the 2023 presidential election.
Wike said all his children supported Peter Obi at the time, even though he had political differences with the former Anambra State governor.
The former Rivers State governor made the disclosure during a TVC interview while discussing the political factors that shaped the 2023 election and the growing contest ahead of 2027.
According to Wike, the controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress’ Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket influenced his children’s decision.
“In 2023, there was a problem with the Muslim-Muslim ticket. There was this campaign about Christianity,” he said.
Wike added that his children chose to support Obi during that period.
“All my children supported Peter Obi,” the minister said.
However, he claimed that their views have since changed.
Wike said some of his children now believe they did not fully understand Obi when they backed him during the last presidential election.
“But now, they are saying that they never knew this man, Peter Obi, was like this,” he added.
The FCT minister also argued that the political concerns surrounding the same-faith presidential ticket have changed.
He credited President Bola Tinubu’s administration with addressing what he described as the controversy that surrounded the issue during the 2023 campaign.
“There are a lot of people who were carried away, but that is no longer there now. Tinubu has been able to kill the Muslim-Muslim ticket problem,” Wike said.
His comments come as political alignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi is now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Channels Television has also reported his role as the NDC candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
Wike, meanwhile, has publicly expressed support for President Tinubu’s 2027 bid. He has also continued to argue that the political circumstances that helped Obi attract significant support in 2023 have changed.
The minister further questioned Obi’s chances in the next presidential contest, arguing that the factors behind his 2023 support are no longer the same. That remains Wike’s political assessment of the upcoming race.
Wike’s latest comments add to his continuing criticism of Obi as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 presidential election.
