2027: ADC Expresses Distrust in INEC Over Vote Protection
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it will not leave the tracking of its votes entirely in the hands of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the 2027 elections.
The party plans to establish its own system for monitoring and collating results from polling units across the country.
ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi disclosed this on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
He said the decision was influenced by his experience during the 2023 general elections, when he contested for a Senate seat.
Abdullahi recalled that candidates had relied on INEC’s assurance that election results would be transmitted automatically to the IReV portal.
However, he said the process did not happen as expected because of what INEC described at the time as a technical problem.
According to Abdullahi, that experience has made the party more cautious ahead of the 2027 election.
He said ADC members would closely monitor the results recorded at polling units and maintain their own records throughout the process.
“We can no longer trust INEC to protect our votes for us,” Abdullahi said.
The party official added that ADC was prepared to protect its votes and compare its records with the official results released by electoral authorities.
He, however, said the party would accept results if they accurately represented the votes cast at polling units.
“If the results at the end of the day reflect the true votes that came from the polling units, we will accept them,” he said.
Abdullahi warned that the party would reject results if they did not correspond with the votes recorded at the polling units.
He said ADC was no longer approaching elections with the same level of reliance on INEC that it had in 2023.
“We are no longer naive,” he said, stressing that the party would remain vigilant throughout the electoral process.
The ADC’s position comes as political parties begin preparations for the 2027 general elections.
For the party, maintaining an independent record of polling-unit results will form part of its strategy for monitoring the election and protecting its votes.
