The fragile calm between the United States and Iran has been shattered once again, as a new wave of American airstrikes on Iranian targets fuels fears that the escalating conflict could spread beyond the two nations and threaten global security.
The US military launched fresh strikes on Iran on Sunday night, saying the operation was aimed at weakening Tehran’s ability to target commercial vessels in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz — a major global trade route through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes.
The operation was ordered by US President Donald Trump, who directed US Central Command forces to begin the strikes in what the military described as an effort to “hold Iranian forces accountable.”
According to CENTCOM, American forces struck dozens of targets across multiple locations using precision weapons. The targets included Iranian air defence systems, coastal radar facilities, missile and drone capabilities, as well as small boats believed to be linked to Iran’s military operations.
In a significant display of military power, US forces deployed fighter aircraft, naval vessels, and unmanned aerial systems during the operation.
However, the strikes quickly triggered a response from Iran. Iranian state media reported attacks across several provinces, claiming at least one person was killed and others injured. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said it launched retaliatory strikes against American military facilities in parts of the Middle East.
The exchange of attacks has intensified concerns that the conflict could move beyond controlled military action and become a broader regional crisis. US and Iranian forces have continued trading threats, with both sides accusing the other of aggression.
The latest confrontation comes after earlier US strikes on Iranian military sites and growing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway considered vital to the global economy.
US President Donald Trump insisted the route remained open after the strikes, while Iran has maintained that it will continue defending its control over the strategic passage.
As the two powers continue their military confrontation, the world watches anxiously, fearing that each new attack could bring the region closer to a larger and more devastating conflict.
