A fresh debate over who should bear the responsibility of tackling poverty in Nigeria has erupted after businessman Isaac Fayose publicly challenged First Lady Remi Tinubu’s appeal to some of the country’s biggest music stars, sparking widespread reactions online.

The controversy began after Mrs. Tinubu, while speaking at an event in Kogi State, urged Afrobeats stars Davido, Burna Boy and Asake to establish non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to support poor Nigerians instead of spending heavily on luxury cars.
According to the First Lady, the government cannot shoulder the burden of poverty alleviation alone, stressing that wealthy celebrities also have a role to play in improving the lives of vulnerable citizens through charitable initiatives.
However, her remarks did not sit well with businessman Isaac Fayose, who strongly disagreed with the appeal.
In a video shared on X, Fayose argued that the government must first demonstrate accountability and responsible use of public funds before asking private citizens to do more.
The younger brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose questioned why the First Lady had previously encouraged state governors to purchase brand-new vehicles for APC women leaders instead of directing those resources towards helping struggling Nigerians.
According to Fayose, while successful entertainers are free to support charitable causes, poverty reduction remains the primary responsibility of the government.
He maintained that Nigerians would be more willing to embrace such calls if public officials consistently prioritised prudent spending and policies that directly improve the welfare of citizens.
The exchange has since generated mixed reactions across social media, with many Nigerians divided over whether celebrities should be expected to play a greater role in addressing poverty or whether government should first lead by example.
The debate has once again brought national attention to issues of public spending, social responsibility and the role of wealthy individuals in supporting economic development.
