A desperate attempt to recover a motorcycle during a heavy downpour has ended in tragedy after a 72-year-old man was swept away by raging floodwaters in Delta State, leaving residents shocked and raising fresh concerns over the dangers of recurring flooding in the area.
The victim, identified as Sunday Aimiyekagbon, lost his life in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, after he was caught in floodwaters along Imudia Street, off Charles Street, while returning home on his motorcycle on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
According to residents, the floodwater rose rapidly during the rainfall, making the road difficult to pass. A source said the elderly man had parked his motorcycle close to a concrete drainage channel and taken shelter in a nearby makeshift shop as the rain intensified.
However, the motorcycle was later swept into the fast-moving drainage by the rising floodwaters. In an attempt to retrieve it, the 72-year-old reportedly entered the water but was overpowered by the strong current and swept away.
His body was later recovered from the area.
The incident has left the victim’s family and members of the community devastated. His son, Ambrose Aimiyekagbon, described the loss as painful and appealed for urgent and lasting solutions to the flooding challenges affecting several parts of Agbor.
Residents have also called on the Delta State Government and the Ika South Local Government Council to take immediate steps to improve drainage systems, clear blocked waterways, and prevent further loss of lives during periods of heavy rainfall.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over the recurring flood problems in Agbor, where residents say poor drainage infrastructure continues to expose communities to serious risks whenever intense rains occur.
As the rainy season continues, locals are urging authorities to act swiftly to address the environmental challenges and prevent similar heartbreaking incidents in the future.
