Governor Nwifuru Sacks Ebonyi Works Commissioner
Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has ordered the immediate removal of Works Commissioner Stanley Lebechi Mbam, in a cabinet shake-up announced on Saturday.
The decision was made public through a statement from the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor. However, the statement did not disclose what prompted Mbam’s removal.
Following the directive, the former commissioner has been asked to return all government property in his possession to the Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government.
His official vehicle is among the items he has been directed to surrender.
Mbam is also expected to hand over the affairs of the Works Ministry to its Permanent Secretary, who will take over his responsibilities following his exit from the cabinet.
The governor, according to the statement, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to effective governance and the development of public infrastructure across the state.
Mbam’s removal comes months after he was subjected to an earlier disciplinary measure by the governor.
In March 2026, Nwifuru indefinitely suspended the Works Commissioner alongside the Commissioner for Infrastructure Concession for Development, Ogbonnaya Abara. The suspension was linked to allegations of dereliction of duty.
The governor subsequently recalled the suspended officials in May, although details about which officials had been recalled were not immediately clear at the time.
The latest development therefore marks a second major action involving Mbam’s position within the Ebonyi State cabinet this year.
Despite the change, the governor’s latest statement provided no explanation for why the commissioner was removed or indicated whether a replacement would be appointed.
For now, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works is expected to oversee the ministry following the governor’s directive.
