Dangote Refinery Launches IPO on Nigerian Exchange Market
The Dangote Refinery has officially opened its initial public offering (IPO), marking a major step in the company’s move toward broader public ownership and deepening participation in Nigeria’s capital market.
Investors, government officials, market operators and other stakeholders gathered at the Nigerian Exchange in Lagos on Monday, September 14, 2026, for the formal launch of the offer.
The ceremony began with the traditional opening gong, which was sounded by Dangote Refinery President and Chief Executive Officer Aliko Dangote, officially signalling the commencement of the subscription period.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the occasion as a significant moment for Nigeria’s financial markets.
Addressing participants, Sanwo-Olu said those present were witnessing history, stressing that the IPO represented more than a corporate fundraising exercise.
He said the development was about creating and deepening the market while expanding investment opportunities to a broader section of the Nigerian population.
The Ooni of Ife also used the occasion to highlight the importance of making the investment accessible to ordinary Nigerians rather than limiting participation to established investors.
He pointed to the growing role of digital platforms, noting that even a small business owner could potentially use a mobile phone to purchase shares and become a part-owner of one of Nigeria’s most prominent industrial projects.
Refinery Presents Growth Plans
Attention then shifted to the business itself, with Dangote Refinery Chief Executive Officer David Bird presenting the “Facts Behind the Offer” to prospective investors.
Bird highlighted the refinery’s operational capabilities, commercial performance, international reach and future expansion plans.
He stressed that investors were not simply buying into a large industrial facility but into an operating company with an expanding business model.
“It’s more than just an asset. It’s a business,” Bird said.
According to the CEO, the refinery has expanded its reach beyond the Nigerian market, including growing aviation fuel exports to Europe.
He also outlined the company’s Vision 2030 strategy, which includes plans to significantly increase refining capacity, broaden its product range and strengthen its distribution network across regional markets.
The planned expansion would take the refinery’s capacity to as much as 1.4 million barrels per day.
Dangote Says Refinery Has Moved Beyond the Dream
Dangote, while addressing the gathering, urged investors to look beyond the refinery’s original vision and focus on the business it has now become.
He argued that the investment opportunity was based on an operating reality rather than an untested ambition.
“We are not investing in just the story… we have passed that dream, we are now nearing what we call reality,” Dangote said.
He also emphasised the importance of ensuring that the enormous value created by the refinery could be shared with a wider group of Nigerians through public ownership.
How Investors Can Participate
Chuka Eseka, Managing Director of Vetiva Capital Management, explained the mechanics of the offer and the incentives available to eligible retail investors.
The offer allows retail investors to subscribe for a minimum of 10 ordinary shares.
Under the retail incentive programme, qualifying investors who maintain their holdings continuously for 12 months can receive an additional share. A further bonus share may be available after another 12-month holding period, subject to the applicable terms.
Investors can participate through various channels, including traditional stockbroking platforms.
The offer has also been structured to meet Shariah-compliant investment requirements, potentially widening its appeal to different categories of investors.
The launch was followed by a question-and-answer session, during which participants sought further information about the refinery’s operations, expansion plans and investment structure.
Responding to questions about the proposed increase to 1.4 million barrels per day, Dangote explained that the expansion would require additional processing units while giving the refinery greater flexibility in its operations.
He also pointed to existing infrastructure and planned increases in storage capacity as key components supporting the expansion.
Nigerian Exchange Group CEO Temi Popoola later addressed participants on the distribution of the offer and how investors would gain access to the shares.
IPO Details
The Dangote Refinery IPO consists of 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 per share.
With a minimum subscription of 10 shares, an investor would need ₦5,250 to participate at the minimum level.
The offer opened on September 14, 2026, and is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.
The launch represents a significant development for Nigeria’s capital market, bringing one of the country’s largest industrial businesses closer to widespread public ownership while giving individual investors an opportunity to participate in its future growth.
